Met up with Capt. Ben Floyd for a day of fishing at day break on Tuesday morning and ran north to some low tide oyster bed areas to get on the red fish. We started out throwing some top water and was able to get hooked up right away. I was using a storm red head popper. The fish ran me into an oyster bed and we lost him. Minutes later we see some fish tailing so I broke out The Red Riper black spoon and threw at the tailing fish and before i could even get the bail flipped back over was hooked up again with same result as before – It took me into another oyster bed so after 30 minutes of fishing I was out $15 of tackle. Then I got on the poling platform to let Ben throw the fly and he was able to catch two reds back to back. After that we threw gulp but did not get any fish to eat. The fish were stacked up back were we were and in the morning hours we probably saw over 1000 fish.
After the morning bite we head back towards the hill. By this time its low tide and we are running back down the ICW and can see schools of Reds working down the bank with birds working them. It was too good to resist so he turn the boat around and put me in position to get my first fish on the fly. The first school gets to us and I blow it. The next school comes up on us and I put the fly in front of his face and he eats it and I then proceed to land a 28 inch Red Fish on a 6wt. Ben then catches two more and gets them to eat within 10ft of the boat. It was a pretty spectacular sight to see them eat up close and personal. We call it a morning and head in to take a break. Also hit up the tailing tide that afternoon and Ben stuck 4 more reds on the fly. We also got 5 more on the gulp Sapphire shine jerk shade and one on a gold spoon. All in all one of the better days I’ve had in a long time. Saw more fish in this one day then I have seen combined in the last 3 years. Thanks Ben for putting me on my first fish on the fly.
