FISHING WITH MY SON
It was a beautiful summer morning heading across the harbor with my son,Lane. The birds and bait were everywhere and we knew this was going to be a good day.
Our first target would be trout in the Cooper river. We got to our first spot and baited up with live shrimp under popping corks right up next to the grass. It didn’t take long and we were both hooked up with nice trout and the action didn’t stop until the tide stopped.
With the slack water we grabbed a sandwich and headed toward the harbor to get some menhaden before we head out to the jetties. We found a couple nice schools behind Fort Sumter so Lane drove the boat while I casted on the menhaden a few times and we had plenty of bait.
Once we made it out to the south jetty we dropped the hook and the boat rested nicely parallel to the rocks. We baited up with live menhaden on the bottom on a couple rods and half a blue crab on the bottom on two more rods. After boating a few nice bonnetthead sharks we re-baited our bottom rods and put them back out. While we were waiting we put a live menhaden under a popping cork and tossed it up next to the rocks and as soon as it hit the water I saw a big swirl in the water and the cork disappeared and after a short fight the 20lb power pro snapped. This happened twice in 2 casts. So I grabbed the big spinning rod with 50lb power pro and tied the hook straight to the power pro and attached a slip cork and put a live menhaden on and tossed it to the rocks. It took three casts this time but Lane got him hooked up and away from the rocks and about 10 minutes later we had him in the boat taking a picture of his nice big redfish.
It was a great day fishing with my son that I will never forget and by the look on his face he wont forget this day either.
