The Artifical Reefs and live bottom areas around Charleston hold a wide variety of fish. I visited one with my brother Greg and nephew Elliott on Sunday and caught lots of Spadefish, Cobia, Amberjack, Spanish Mackerel and even a Redfish.
For the Spadefish, We used Shimano Stradic spin reels and Calcutta baitcasting reels. We netted some Cannonball Jellyfish for bait as we left the inlet.
The Spanish Mackerel were caught with the same rods/reels except we used Maria jigs and Castmaster Spoons.
I caught the Redfish quite by accident as I had dropped a butterfly jig down to the bottom to try for a Grouper or Amberjack. I had just bought an Avet reel to go with my 6’6″ MH Trevala jigging rod and I highly recommend the combination.
For the Cobia, AJ’s, and Baracuda we used heavier spin rods/reels and we also threw The Magnum Cowens Baitfish Fly and some large Poppers on a 12wt fly rod with Nautilus reel.
Could’nt have asked for a better day.
