World’s worst kayak fly fisherman

The other day my cousin and I went out to the Edisto River on our kayaks to enjoy the water and try to get some fishing in. The Charleston Angler outfitted us with all of the fly gear needed to fish the fresh water stretch of the Edisto.  Unfortunately I was so stoked about my new gear that I forgot to ask how to go about using it.  These next two videos show me giving it my best with the fly rod in a fish feeding frenzy. As it turns out I probably should have just brought a net. The first short video is me changing out flies after a giant bass literally jumps and lands on my line.  When I see this happen, I change to a larger white popper hoping to crush the fish.

Now that I’ve changed out flies, it’s time to catch that big one….right? Instead the fish decide to make fun of me with their mocking acrobatics all around me. During this short video, you can see at least half a dozen fish surface all around me. If you have any advice for me, let me know! They say that a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work, but to be honest, I don’t remember the last time I was this stressed out at work. It might be time for me to sign up for one of John Irwin’s monthly fly fishing classes. Well until next time, cheers.

I am not sure if this goes to the person who posted it, but the Edisto is FULL of gar, which “gulp” at the surface constantly. They can be easily confused with hungry bream sucking bugs from the water. I didn’t get a really good look at many of the splashes, but that may have been the problem. Fishing in the Edisto is normally best in sloughs and eddies. It looks like a lot of the fishing was being done in the middle of the river.
